Living and working in Berlin and Istanbul Ayşe Erkmen invites to think about the notion of ‘travelling’ with her single show at Şekerbank Açıkekran New Media Arts Gallery. Who is renowned for her work representing Turkey in the Venice Biennale as well as her international awards. Bringing “a non-naive dream of freedom and leisure time” into question with her new exhibition curated by Ali Akay, she points out the consumption world offered as freedom with various images she has selected from the global cinema and with the city advertisements.

Although travel is generally considered as a moment of freedom and resting for employed people, Ayşe Erkmen reveals that any time of an artist is a leisure time, but any second is a moment of thinking. And she reminds that if the time considered as liberty and freedom is not assigned to thinking, it is conveyed to consumption. Even the moments looking like entertainment run on the ‘corporate culture’ and consumption as an accelerated game. With “Traveling and Living”, Erkmen confronts the viewer with the fact that even the dream of freedom has a cost.

By means of the question “is it liberalization?” the artist emphasizes the notion of ‘leisure time’ grabbed by the city promoters or travel companies and melted in the consumption cycle.

“Traveling and Living” will be available to see in Şekerbank Açıkekran New Media Arts Gallery until June 14 to rethink about the liberating experiences. The video work titled“Ein Weg” included in the scope of the exhibition to meet the art-lovers everyday except Sunday and Monday will be available for 24 hours a day to view through specially designed monitors in Şekerbank’s 9 branches: Istanbul Feneryolu, Ankara Küçükesat and Çankaya, Tekirdağ Alpullu, Ordu, Izmir, Bodrum, Mardin and Edirne.
